Founder of Bigg Bunny Farms Limited and Nhyira Feeds, Nathaniel A. Quartey, has called on stakeholders in Ghana’s poultry industry to explore egg processing as a strategic avenue for reducing losses, creating jobs, and increasing value addition within the agricultural sector.

Speaking on Adwinton Business Hour with host Awal Yahya, Mr. Quartey urged poultry farmers, investors, and policymakers to move beyond the traditional sale of fresh eggs and embrace modern egg-processing technologies that can unlock new market opportunities.
“Let’s think outside the box and start looking at egg processing,” Mr. Quartey said. “As an industry, we must begin to add value to our products if we want to remain competitive and maximise returns.”
According to him, egg processing presents enormous opportunities for Ghana’s poultry sector, particularly during periods of excess production when farmers often struggle with low market prices and reduced demand.

He explained that processed egg products, including liquid eggs, powdered eggs, egg yolk concentrates, and egg white products, have longer shelf lives and can serve a wide range of industries such as food manufacturing, bakeries, hospitality, pharmaceuticals, and catering services.

Mr. Quartey noted that value addition through processing could help stabilize egg prices, reduce post-production losses, and create additional income streams for poultry farmers and agribusiness entrepreneurs.

“Ghana produces millions of eggs every year, but very little attention is given to processing. This represents a huge untapped opportunity for investors and the poultry industry as a whole,” he stated.

The agribusiness entrepreneur further stressed the need for public-private partnerships and investment in processing facilities to support the growth of the sector.

He also encouraged government agencies and financial institutions to support initiatives aimed at developing agro-processing industries, which he described as critical to achieving sustainable agricultural transformation.

Industry observers believe that increased investment in egg processing could enhance food security, improve export potential, and strengthen the resilience of Ghana’s poultry value chain.

Mr. Quartey’s remarks come at a time when agricultural stakeholders are increasingly advocating for value addition as a means of boosting profitability and reducing dependence on the sale of raw agricultural products.

The discussion formed part of a broader conversation on innovation, agribusiness development, and opportunities within Ghana’s livestock and poultry industries on Adwinton Business Hour.
