The Chief Executive Officer of Tobdar Pig Farms, Mr. Tobias Deku, has called on the Government of Ghana to place a ban on the importation of pig meat and pork parts into the country in order to protect and promote the local pig industry.

According to Mr. Deku, Ghanaian pig farmers possess the capacity to produce quality pork to meet the growing demand of consumers across the country. However, the influx of imported pork products continues to create unfair competition for local farmers, affecting their profitability and growth.

Speaking on the challenges facing the pig farming sector, Mr. Deku noted that local producers invest heavily in feed, healthcare, housing, and farm management, yet struggle to compete with imported pork products that often enter the market at lower prices.

He stressed that a ban on imported pig meat and pork parts would encourage local production, create employment opportunities, increase farmers’ incomes, and strengthen Ghana’s agricultural value chain.

“The government must prioritize local pig farmers by restricting the importation of pig meat and pork parts. This will boost local production, create jobs for the youth, and help retain more revenue within the Ghanaian economy,” Mr. Deku stated.

He further urged policymakers to introduce additional support measures, including access to affordable credit, improved veterinary services, and modern farming technologies to enhance productivity within the sector.

Mr. Deku believes that with the right policies and government support, Ghana can become self-sufficient in pork production and significantly reduce its dependence on imported pork products.

His appeal comes at a time when stakeholders in the agricultural sector are advocating stronger measures to promote local production and improve food security across the country.
