Nhyira Feeds and Bigg Bunny Farms Limited Boss, Mr. Nathaniel A. Quartey, has stated that Palm Kernel Cake (PKC), a valuable by-product of the palm oil industry, remains significantly underutilized in animal feed formulation across Ghana.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Adwinton Business Hour with host Awal Yahya, Mr. Quartey noted that despite Ghana’s abundance of palm-based products, many feed manufacturers and livestock farmers have yet to fully harness the nutritional and economic benefits of Palm Kernel Cake in feed production.
According to him, PKC has the potential to reduce feed production costs while serving as an important source of fibre and energy for various livestock, including pigs, poultry, cattle, goats, and sheep when properly formulated.
Mr. Quartey explained that the increasing cost of conventional feed ingredients such as maize and soybean meal makes it necessary for the livestock industry to explore alternative feed resources that are locally available and affordable. He emphasized that Palm Kernel Cake presents a viable solution to this challenge.
He further called for increased research, farmer education, and collaboration between feed manufacturers, agricultural institutions, and policymakers to promote the effective utilization of PKC in animal nutrition.
“Ghana produces substantial quantities of palm kernel by-products every year, yet Palm Kernel Cake is still underutilized in feed formulation. There is a great opportunity for the livestock industry to take advantage of this resource to improve feed sustainability and profitability,” Mr. Quartey stated.
The seasoned agribusiness entrepreneur also encouraged farmers to seek professional guidance when incorporating alternative feed ingredients into their feeding programmes to ensure optimal animal performance and health.
